more blahs

here is another trial

This past week, we focused on how to do a better research in google. We used a site that had very much information about NETS, and we followed the steps it showed us towards the best results we can find in Google. I was surprised to see the the wide difference of the number of hits I got for each search on the same topic. If I searched more specifically, I have less hits than when I seached vaguely. For example, I wanted to find information about the lost continent, Atlantis. When I only typed in ‘Atlantis’, I had 42 million hits with very broad topid. Movies, hotels, and everything that I didn’t need appeared. But when I typed in ‘Atlantis Continent’, I had better results that actually had information that I needed. If I go more specific, I get better results. If you want to find this easily, you can click th link that says ‘Advaned Search’ that is next to the searching tab, you can follow the steps it tells you that leads to better results. This is what I learned throughout this activity.

You found this Romeo & Juliet WebQuest that

you really like. Are there more like that where

this one came from?

Start here:

http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education

/projects/webquests/shakespeare/

Now trim away the last part:

/projects/webquests/

What do you see?

Trim it again, Sam:

/projects/

Now try this:

A friend told you of another cool Shakespeare

WebQuest and emailed you the URL:

http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wmi/wq/collin/index.html

That URL turned out to be wrong, though.

Can you find the real URL, and see if there are other worthy WebQuests at the same

site?

The right URL:  http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/

2 Pictures & Descriptions

The first picture was taken in the front of SSIS, and it shows the aprtment called “Park View”.

The second picture is taken from the 20th floor of Diamond Plaza, and I think it contains very much of Distict One, but I’m not exactly sure.

Reflection- N.E.T.S

I NEVER KNEW GOOGLE HAD ADVANTAGED SEARCH!!

I THOUGHT DOGPILE WAS THE ONLY ONE WITH ADVANTAED SEARCH!!

The activity taught me how to use many tools that I didn’t know it exists, or didn’t know how to use.

We also learned how to use advantaged search effectively to get better results.

The activity was cool and helpful, it’s going to save alot of my time while working on researching projects by not showing irrelevant information but only the needed ones.

Through out the activity , NETS, I have learned that there are more useful ways to search. Before I have only searched with normal engine not using advanced search. Elimitnating the words that is not needed  helped to find faster. Now I know how to search more effectly next time if have chanced to do homework with this engine I would like to try them out later.

REFLECTIONS-

Before we started using the advanced search, we tried the search “atlantis” on normal search, it gave a huge amounts of unrelated websites, but with the help of the advanced search, we shrinked the number of websites, or hits, down to a really positive number, which we can search and find what we need faster.

After the activity NETS, I learned how to use advanced search for better searching in my life, it helps me shrink down the number of websites I have to check in order to acquire my purpose of searching. I also learned how to use more tools in the advanced search that I never knew before.

Refect on Advanced Search

Usually, i just type in google what i want to know about. It would take me hours  because there are so many results. Some of them are not even what i want to know about. Today, Mr. Bertoia told us about the 4 NET. That stands for “start Narrow, use Exact phrases, Trim the URL, seek Similar pages”. It is easier for me now because i wouldn’t have to spend more time on finding informations about what i want.
